WHAT PIONEER SAY

The DVR-212 with SATA interface offers writing support for Dual and Double Layer media types at 10x speed, along with 18x writing speeds for DVD-R/+R, 12x writing to DVD-RAM, 6x writing to DVD-RW and 8x writing to +RW.

The drive’s combined specifications deliver one of the highest levels of all-round DVD-writing performance and quality currently available.

Key features DVR-212
Writes and reads DVD-RAM, DVD-R/RW, +R/RW and CD-R/RW formats

Buffer under-run protection for CD/DVD
Performance Adjusting Firmware: automatically optimises the disc’s rotation speed depending on the user’s application – for example, if watching a movie or listening to music, the disc velocity is reduced in order to keep background noise to a minimum.
Multi-effect Liquid Crystal Tilt Compensator - further improves recording and playback characteristics by compensating for discs that are warped or of uneven thickness (operates at high speeds and with Dual/Double layer discs
Ultra-DRA (Dynamic Rosonance Absober) - suppresses vibration caused by imbalanced discs.
Disc-Resonance Stabiliser - controls the airflow generated by the disc-rotation to minimise disc-warping effect that can occur when a disc rotates at high speed.

Hi
Very nice simple.
Can you tell us if you've had any success with bitsetting?
This maybe important to some & I see no reference here. (Yet).

@imastud about 20 mins when i pulled my finger out

BITSETTING..... no mention your right ... this drive will only booktype +r dual layer media and that is if you crossflash the drive with buffalo firmware i am emailing pioneer about this to see if they can shed some light.

however if you use this drive for xbox 360 backups and you are using new firmware or above version 3.xx on your console there is no need to booktype those dual layer backups.

okay here is the reply from PIONEER a plus for 360 users

Dear simple,

If you are writing to a +R or +RW (single layer) disc, the disc will be finalised with the +R book type. It will not be finalised with the DVD-ROM booktype setting. In this case, you would need to use bit-setting utility to change the booktype from +R or +RW to DVD-ROM. However, if you are writing to a +R DL (double layer) disc, the disc will be automatically finalised with the DVD-ROM book type setting. So you do not need to change the bit-setting in this case as the DVD-ROM booktype will give most compatibility with legacy DVD players and recorders.

I hope this information helps.

Best regards,

The DVR-212 (212D in the US) is a good solid drive, though I feel the Samsung SH-S203B is a better all around drive. Sure, it does not bitset SL +R media, but if you burn Taiyo Yuden DVD-R media it is outstanding. However, I am not very impressed with how it burns Verbatim MCC03RG20 and firmware 1.22 was supposed to address that. Will have to see how it matures there, but Plextor just put out a firmware (PX-755/760) that addressed issues with MCC03RG20 and I am pretty happy with those results.

Regarding bitsetting. ???

Can you not do the same as the 112. Flash to " L " firmware as i have done with the 112D. ???? 112D - flashed - 112L full auto bitsetting now !!

Or even flash to the 212 to the DVR - S12J firmware. Just the Japanese retail version of the drive thats all. It may not be able to be done on the sata version but though it would be worth mentioning.

Not at the moment. Still waiting on TDB or someone to hack the firmware for the 212 drives... I know they put out a beta some time ago and pulled it almost immediately (reason unknown, but there must have been a problem), but that was just to flash the 212D to a 212 (only adding DVD-RAM writing)... I know Buffalo has a SATA drive based on the 212 that does auto-bitsetting.

Thanks for the reply SithTracy.

Thats what i am using for the IDE 112, the buffalo 8.09 "L" firmware.

But we did need TDB to create a flasher first so we could flash to pioneer 112L firmware prior to being able to flash to Buffalo.

I will keep my eye open but i am sure they will release some for you guys and girls. As you stated buffalo have a SATA version of this drive so that part is already available.

I have both a Pioneer DVD212 SATA burner and an LG H62 N SATA burner and use exclusivly Verbatim ink jet printable 16x DVD-R discs. I still don't burn at any more than 6x and do not get errors using DVDFab 3 and DVDFab 4. I tend to use the LG burner now with DVDFab but earlier LG burners gave lots of coasters hence my choise of another brand burner. The new SATA burners using DVDFab seem to prefer the LG burner now.
Fast burns are just not worth doing as you can still get errors at the recommended speed using DVDFab. After copying a BBC series that I bought on e-Bay as Europeon region 2, I had to reburn half of them because of errors at the DVDFab recommended burn speed. I am now ultra carefull and burn 16x discs at 4 or 6X speed and get perfect copies playable on any DVD player. The moral of this story is don't be in a hurry when copying and removing region codes etc from other countries DVDs. I won't import DVDs from USA as they don't convert well due to their different frame rate.
