I just installed the whole suite using the custom option so that I could make sure INCD was not selected for install.

Never had a problem with it (nero) being installed as I just run it when required.

I chose the custom option just so I could see for myself that it wouldn't be installed. (never trusted these auto installs)

Im i two minds about it mate im always installing and uninstalling it as i has its ups and downs, i mainly use it for burning bin/cue files, but now i have found alcohol120% i find it a as you say less intrusive than nero. I also find some of the video editing a bit dodgy as most the time it gets to the end of the encoding and decides to backin on me.

It is very good for audio and media playback.

and yes you can compress using nero, the backup and burning rom is really good.

But its a big program and very ram hungry

Alcohol has it's own set of problems and can create havoc with other backup programs; Nero has some very good and very troublesome areas much like Stonker outlined in his post above. Now use Roxio for a while, especially with Vista and you will then love Nero and Alcohol. LOL
