Default BenQ's QSuite: A Guide to...

:Table Of Contents:

Hi
To start download QSuite 2.1 here:

If a BenQ/Philips (or clone) drive that supports QSuite is not the 1st in line then you will get a a window warning to point out that QSuite only supports selective BenQ drives. Plus advice to read online manual etc. Just click OK.

This will then give a dialog window saying “Sorry, QSuite is exclusive to BenQ drives. For product information please visit BenQ. http://globalbenq.com/. Again just click OK.

This should give the following screen. Select drive as shown.

This should in turn present you with this screen. If QSuite supports the first drive, this is the screen that you'll get from the beginning.

Hi
N.B. To avoid the above. Either connect the relevant BenQ drive as the 1st or change order in which drives are seen by Windows. Right click My computer > left click Manage > left click Drive Management > right click the drive concerned > left click Change Drive Letter & Paths > you now have a window that will let you Add, Change or Remove. Take care. You can only assign a free letter, so more than one change is likely. See attached:

What:
QSuite is a utility that allows the user access/control of certain features.
Features : -

1st Tab : - Information :

Upper section shows Drive Info.
Firmware Version: Shows current f/w. Enabling user to tell if it’s the latest.
Buffer Size: 2Mb Memory .Used to hold data that is to be read/written.
Connection Jnterface: ATAPI/IDE (ATAPI – [ AT Attachment Packet Interface] The specification for IDE. IDE - [Integrated Drive Electronics] Type of h/w interface widely used to connect hard disks, optical disks etc to a PC.
DVD Region setting: Shows Region drive is set to i.e. 1, 2, 3 etc generally drive must be set to appropriate Region in order to access/play Regional DVDs. However combinations of patched f/w & s/w may bypass this.

Lower section shows Disc Information.

Media Table: Shows if media in drive is supported by drives f/w or not.
Disc Type: Shows just that i.e. DVD-R/DVD-RW/DVD-DL/DVD+R/DVD+RW/DVD+DL.
Manufacture ID: Shows the coating manufacturer.* Example MCC
Media Type ID: Shows the type of coating (this in turn shows the media speed rating as proposed by manufacturer).* Example 004
Blank Disc Capacity: Does just that. i.e. DVD5/DVD9 (Shows this in MB)

Some anomalies appear here *. Unbranded media like Taiyo Yuden can show Media ID in the Manufacture ID (TYG02). But then leaves Media Type ID blank (-).

2nd Tab : - Book Type:

Upper section shows Drive Information.

Lefthand column shows media type (Note – media cannot be Book Typed, but that shouldn’t present a problem in most cases)[circled black].
Central column shows Drives current setting. [circled red].
Righthand column shows buttons that will change Drives setting (New setting displayed in relevant button).
N.B. Book Type Introduction. Most DVD drives can recognise DYD-ROM, as well as other formats (DVD+R/+RW/+R DL/-R/-RW/- DL). However some older players in particular can have problems recognising non DVD-ROM. Changing from DVD+R, DVD+DL, DVD+RW to DVD ROM helps to eliminate possibly incompatabilities on playback using a variety of stand alone players.

Lower section Media Status.

This section does what it says.

Check Media button. Click on this to get information from current disc inserted.
Lefthand section shows.
Current Media: i.e. DVD+R .
Current Book Type: i.e. DVD ROM.
Righthand section shows Modify section. Button is greyed out with – media. As Book Type is done when writing this section will not make any changes to write once only media. However you can change from DVD+RW to DVD ROM or even DVD ROM to DVD+RW.
Click on Set to DVD+RW Type or Set to DVD-ROM (Whichever is appropriate).

Window pops up asking if you want to change now. Click OK.

Window pops up once complete telling you action is complete. Click OK.

DVDRW tray will open then close & media read. This is followed by comfirmation of change.

3rd Tab : - QScan:

Firstly let’s get it clear. This is a guide & not some scientific measuring tool to which you must adhere. Generally only use if unsure as to the media quality of the media you’re using. When this test is run. No account of the affect that SolidBurn & WOPC will make whilst media is being written to.
How : - By measuring TE/FE* signal on blank media, QScan is able to the disc quality. This is shown in the clear graphic display. It can also show the speed supported by the drive. This may exceed claimed speed (especially if OverSpeed is enabled).
*TE - Tracking Error. FE - Focus Error.

Setting:
Drive Speed. This will show the speed rating of the media as seen by the drive. This may be altered with 4x & 8x by enabling OverSpeed. Then 16x is shown regardless.(circled black)
Start position End position, simply shows the amount or area measured. (circled burgundy).
TE/FE Test Area:
Sampling Rate can be set via a drop down menu [Normal – default,Full, Quick, Smart & Custom]. Plus Start/Stop buttons. (circled blue)
Show Criteria. Tick boxes to show limits in graph area. Plus Elapsed Time, time taken to run test.(circled red).
Graph Area (circled purple)

8x rated media with OverSpeed disabled(default).

8x media with OverSpeed enabled.

4th Tab : - WOPC:

WOPC (Walking Optimal Power Control) is a technology that dynamically adjusts the laser power rate according to disc condition. BenQ DVDRW products, by default, have this function enabled to maximise writing quality. BenQ suggest that if your media is top quality, you can disable this function, Doing so is likely to reduce burn time. Also if media is exceptionally poor (DVD-R) & burning at low speed (<4x) in an effort to have a successful burn. Disable WOPC.

Settings. WOPC is enabled by default. Selecting WOPC disabled is a temporal setting. That is temporary.
On reboot WOPC is enabled.

5th Tab : - Test Write:

Due to defined DVD+R/DVD+RW/DVD+DL spec, current DVD burning s/w does not support write simulation. With Test Write enabled the simulation of data burning can be performed. When simulation is a success, it increases the likelihood for actual burning to succeed.

Once again any setting to enabled is temporal.

6th Tab : - SolidBurn:

For as long as most users have had writers. They’ve come to accept the relative f/w updates to better performance in media support of their writers. With SolidBurn, the theory is that you need not update the f/w constantly. The drive itself ensuring an optimal writing strategy on all DVD+/-R media. SolidBurn has it’s own self learning algorithm to allow unknown DVD+/-R media to be written with increased quality.

Status.
Contians Check button. Click this to check status. Disc symbol with diagonal red line shows Disabled/ Non-Activated. Disc with symbol shows Enabled/Activated. (circled black). Setting.
This allpws user to change setting from Disabled/Non-Activated to Enabled/Activated & vice versa. (circled red).
EEPROM Clean Tool.
Does just that erases Learned Memory* ( can be useful if a particularly bad disc has thrown SolidBurn “off track”). Enabling user to start afresh. Just click on Clean button. (circled yellow). *Some f/w updates will erase any Learned Memory.
Learned Disc.
Shows quantity of discs learned (currently limited to 6).)circled dark blue).
Media Information.
Shows MID (Media ID) of learned discs (again limit is 6). (circled light blue).

Most DVDRW’s burn media at media speed rating, sometimes lower. With OverSpeed, you’re able to burn 4x or 8x DVD+/- media at higher speeds. (QSuite 2 or later is required).

Status.
Again a Check button once clicked will verify if OverSpeed is Enabled/Disabled.

Using QScan
:

Imortance of TE & FE.

1. A good quality disc will have a clear track so a drive can write data more easily. Correctly focused laser makes a clearly defined pit. Hence , low TE/FE errorcan increase the writing quality of the drive.
2.If burning at low speed. A drive servo has the opportunity to compensate small TE/FE/variance of the disc. However at the increased speeds of todays drive. TE/FE plays an important part in assessing if the disc can be burned at the desired speed successfully.

As burning quality is a combination of drive & media. Having got a decent drive, plus DVD media coming in a variety of brands/printings. QScan will attempt to show disc quality via a graphic description.
Scans results can differ between batches of media (even with the same MID) due to varying sources/storage/place in the production run & so on.

Scanning.
Five modes are available.
Normal - A single-layer DVD+R/-R (4.7GB) takes 10 minutes to scan, & +R/-R DL disc takes about double the time.
Full - A single-layer DVD+R/-R (4.7GB) takes 20 minutes to scan, & +R/-R DL disc takes about double the time.
Quick - A single-layer DVD+R/-R (4.7GB) takes 2 minutes to scan, & +R/-R DL disc takes about double the time.
Smart - Required scan time depends on disc speeds available. One speed available for single-layer takes 20 seconds, & +R/-R DL requires double the time.
Customised - Under customised mode you can select & end scanning LBA (Logical Block Address). Note the input limitation : -

Start Position Minimum=0

End Position (1) Maximum =22295103 (2.7GB SL)

Maximum = 4153823 (8.5GB DL)

(2) End position value must be at least 150000 greater than start position.
